God does not forget us. He said in Hebrews 13: 5 “I will never leave you or forsake you.” His promise is to the whole world and throughout all generations. He remembers us for a reason. Deuteronomy 4: 31 says because the LORD your God is a merciful God, he will neither abandon you nor destroy you; he will not forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them. We are beneficiaries of the covenant because we are one body with Christ, a unique heritage.
God posed a question in Isaiah 49: 15-16 can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. God will not forget his hands but protect it as part of his being and so shall we. All our challenges are before him, he knows it all. nor allow injury to anyone to harm his hands. The lord saves by his hands where we are inscribed. Isaiah 59: 1 says see, the Lord’s hand is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.
Why does God remember us?
Among the reasons why God remembers us, Romans 4: 4 says now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. God does not forget his faithful sheep but remembers them because they are precious in his sight. He therefore remembers them to reward them for their earned hard work in his glorious vineyard. Psalms 72: 14 says from oppression and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight.
Jesus affirmed that we are precious to God. He said in Matthew 6: 26-31 If God so feeds the birds and clothes the grass, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown inti the oven, will he not much more clothe you–you of little faith? (paraphrased). God remembers us and will provide for our needs. Jesus said in Luke 12: 24 consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! Even in death, he does not forget his saints. Psalms 116: 15 says precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones.
How does God remember us?
First, God is omnipresent and omniscient, he is present everywhere and sees everything. Psalms 121: 4 says He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Stephen in his erudite defence quoted what scripture said about God in Acts 7: 49-50 ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool… Did not my hand make all these things? Nothing can escape his knowledge as the creator. Jesus said in Matthew 28: 20 I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Second, God keeps a record of each and every event under the sun. t is recorded in Revelation 3: 5 if you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels. God remembers us per his records in the book of life. Revelation 20: 12 says and the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books of life. The records are sacrosanct that only Christ Jesus is worthy to open it.
Revelation 5: 2-9 ask, who is worthy to open the scroll and break the seal?… They sing a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, for you were slaughtered and by your blood you ransomed for God, saints from every tribe and language and people and nation. God’s record tells the truth.
When does God remember us?
God remembers us always and everywhere and in particular our times of need. Philippians 4: 19 says my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Ours is to call upon him and he will perform. David wrote in Psalms 55: 16 I will call upon God, and the LORD will save me. God said in Jeremiah 29: 12 then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.
God will also remember us on the final day. Revelation 22: 12 says “See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone’s work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, beginning and the end.” Because God knows our beginning and the end, his remembrance is sound as he is faithful. Psalms 58: 11 says “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth. Isaiah 40: 11 says He (God)will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Until the end, he will remember us.
What is God’s saving instrument?
God enables us by his grace. We by our nature have no righteousness to our credit to make God to remember us. Isaiah 64: 6 says we have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like filthy cloth. It is therefore by grace that we are remembered or not forgotten. Ephesians 2: 8-9 say for by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is a gift of God–not the result of works, so that no one may boast.
If we want to be remembered by God through his only Son Christ Jesus our Lord, we must appropriate and accept and apply his grace in faith. Romans 6: 1 says should we continue to sin in order that grace may abound? Grace restores us to God when we confess our sins and submit to Christ Jesus. 1John 1: 9 says if we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Do we equally remember God in our thoughts, hearts and deeds?
