God said of himself to Moses in Exodus 3: 14, “I AM WHO I AM.” Jesus said of himself in John 11: 25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. He also said in John 14: 6, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. We also know who we are before God.

The devil testified about Jesus and Paul in Acts 19: 15, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Faking an identity will not change who we truly are. God knows those who are fated for destruction for he said in Hosea 4: 6, my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Who we are, may be answered from three perspectives: (1) our composition and; (2) our character.

Our composition

1Thessalonians 5: 23 says, may your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. This shows the object of our composition: to be blameless on the judgment day. We are composed of three parts, spirit, soul and body:

Our spirit

The Spirit is God’s breath in us. Genesis 2: 7 says, God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being. Jesus said he is the Spirit that gave life for he said in John 14: 6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. Without him, there is no life, there is nothing we can hide from him. Hebrews 4: 13 says, nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Our soul

The soul is our spiritual persona accountable for our actions and inactions. It lives on to face judgment after death. Revelation 20: 12 says, the dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. In verse 25, anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. So, Jesus asked in Matthew 16: 26; Mark 8: 36, what good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? Jesus therefore said in Matthew 10: 28, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Our souls will face God’s judgment.

Our body

The body was made from dust as Genesis 2: 7 says. It also decays or dies. Psalm 90: 10 says, our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Our years on earth are not certain but by grace. Psalm 103: 15 says, the life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. Life may end without prior notice. Are we ready?

Our character

Paul said in 1Corinthians 5: 4-5, so, when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man (body) over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. In other words, give up on worldliness and be saved. Our character must reflect God’s will 1John 2: 17 says, the world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. Doing God’s will leads to salvation in Christ Jesus in eternal life.

Romans 8: 6 says, the mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. What governs our minds? Galatians 5: 17 says, the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Sadly, we try to satisfy both whereas John 6: 63 says, the Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The one who sins will die. What will be our fate after death?

What do we say about ourselves?

John 1: 8-10 says, if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. Be truthful to your Spirit and soul about who you are so you may escape judgment. Christ Jesus is waiting!

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, help me to be truthful to you about who I am. Help me to confess that I may be saved. Help my weakness so that I may be strong in you. Reveal who I am to me that I may serve you in the newness of life through your blood. Save me Lord, from the love of the flesh in your blessed holy name, Amen!!

Send us your prayer request so we may join you in prayer
